John Wesley Powell’s 1869 expedition to map the Colorado River receives a twist in this play wherein the rugged white explorers are played by a diverse cast of female and nonbinary actors. The ironic and often comic result, “Men on Boats,” explores the West’s mighty river, the imagined new world as created by our legends, and the question of who and what gets left out of American history.
